The first visit to a physiotherapist will include a detailed subjective history. This relates to when and possibly how the complaint started, the duration of symptoms, and whether it is acute(sudden/traumatic) or chronic (long standing) in nature. Lifestyle factors (including work, sport, postural issues) that contribute to pain/dysfunction will also be addressed. The past history of similar problems and any other relevant medical complaints will also be discussed.
A physical assessment then follows which may involve a range of movement/specific tests for your disorder as well as strength and functional analysis. A more broad based biomechanical assessment of the affected limb or region can reveal altered patterns of movement. Hands on palpation of the region is also useful in assessing tightness/tenderness in the underlying tissues.
Following this comprehensive initial assessment of your problem the physiotherapist will discuss the diagnosis and possible pathology of your condition. An appropriate treatment plan is then formulated with realistic short term and long term goals specific to your condition and lifestyle/sport. Further relevant investigations such as X-rays or scans may be considered if clinically indicated but this is often not necessary.
